A subtle but sophisticated identity
was created to represent this
New York and San Francisco-
based boutique art advisory
agency working with a range of
clients, including art collectors,
art galleries, art fairs, museums,
curators, auction houses, and
corporations. I structured the logo
using ‘AK’ as the advisor, and
the client literally seeing ‘Art’ on
the wall. The letterforms not
only represent the initials of the
company owner, but also a
subtle nod to ‘AKA’ or ‘Also
Known As… Art.’ The relationship
between the open forms
of the ‘K’ and the crown of the
‘A’ further enhance the idea
of open communication
between AKArt and their clients.

A tiered logo concept was
proposed for the membership
rewards program from
American Express. The simple
yet bold typographic
solution, is locked up with
a graphic symbol that
reflects the idea of a gift
package—hinting at
the idea of a portal or special
place where rewards can
be redeemed. The symbol
from the mark was then used
as a graphic device within
the catalog series to place
focus on certain aspects of
the photographic narrative. 

A husband-and-wife team
specializing in the design and
construction of high-end
homes throughout the Bay Area,
the acronym references not
only ‘Art’ and ‘Design’ but the
two owners, Adele and Dave.
The mark needed to convey
a sense of spatial design and
building, with the letterforms
mirroring the experience
of looking down at blueprints
for a new home. 

A New York theatre production
about a woman who survives
the Holocaust by disguising
herself as an Aryan, the logo
needed to instantly convey
the emotion and sense of time
behind the play. The expressive
typography was combined
with transforming the letterforms
into lit candles to visually
reference ancient Hebrew letters.

A romantic comedy—written by
Jeff Daniels—about a woman
and how her view of life, work,
and relationships changes
when she moves into a new
apartment and meets
the colorful characters in her
building. A custom typeface
was used to reflect the
gritty but playful feeling of
a downtown New York
apartment. The waltz was
a central theme of the
play and symbol of life’s
dance, which was reflected
in the playfulness of the
misaligned letterforms—the
‘E’ representing the main
character of the play.

Bud Glick is a New York-based
commercial and fine art
photographer whose work
focuses on journalistic-style
portraits. For the visual
identity, a typographic solution
was created that references
the photographer’s horizon line.

A chain of gourmet cafés
located within office buildings
in Southern California,
the mark represents an office
skyline made up of iconic
baking tools.

A t-shirt line for a reality
television show about extreme,
‘white trash’ sports in the
United States. The show title
and logo design reference
the most well-known event
called Catfish Noodling,
in which contestants try to
catch a catfish in shallow
waters with their bare hands.

As a producer of allergen bedding
products, the mark needed
to capture the core idea behind
products which protect one’s
sleep. Using a bold but friendly
typographic solution, the
CleanRest name is turned on
its side and placed within
a graphic barrier to represent
two people sleeping soundly
in their protected bed.

A play about three generations
of a Puerto Rican family who serve
in three different wars: Korea,
Vietnam, and Iraq. The central
theme of strong family and cultural
bonds between generations
was brought to life in the play
with the underlying metaphor of
the mother’s garden and its
growing vines. The garden vine
that appears as a barbed wire
and weaves throughout the
letterforms was also an important
part of the theater poster design.

A non-profit organization operating
from Harvard University which
brings families together to help
realize the benefits of family
dinners: the power to nourish
ethical thinking. The two quote
marks of the logo frame the
wordmark—reminiscent of a
dinner table—and communicate
the major brand tenets of food
and fun that lead to meaningful
conversation. The left quote,
which resembles a smiling face
in conversation, conveys playful
and open dialogue. The right
quote with a fork embedded at
the crook of the mark, represents
food—the preparation, cooking,
eating, and sharing with family.

An independent film production
company based in New York City,
the logo reflects a captured
moment on film and the motion
of a traditional film strip reel.

A visual identity was
created to directly reference
Health Leads’ unique
organizational model of
leveraging college students’
skills to overcome the
critical challenges low-income
patients simultaneously
face—they have little food,
they are unemployed,
they struggle to keep up
with bills—which affects their
health. The organization
connects patients with the
basic resources they need
to get and stay healthy.

specializing in miniature cakes. 

After shortening their name
to simply Milberg, a new brand
was developed which needed
to reflect a sense of renewal
and distinguish this sophisticated,
yet contemporary, law firm.
The mark itself represents their
unique cache as having a
fully integrated team of high
level specialists in various fields.

A conceptual installation and
performance piece by artist
Michelle Hartney addressing the
U.S.’ high rates of maternal
mortality. Hartney sewed 1,200
hospital gowns—one for every
mother who died in childbirth
in America in 2013—silk-screened
with designs of the plant
derivatives of the drugs that
have been used on laboring
women for the past 150 years.
In the performance, pairs of
women folded the gowns into
triangles—similar to the way
the American flag is folded at
the funeral of a solider. 
These gowns were designed
to end on the ninth fold, as
the traditional flag-folding
ceremony includes 12 symbolic
folds—with the ninth fold
symbolizing womanhood.
In the logo, the interlocking
triangle symbol embodies
these folds using the icon
for womanhood.

One of New York City’s first
arts-infused high schools,
the mark is composed of four
segments—each containing
different parts of the
school initials. Each segment
represents the various
elements of the school’s
dynamic curriculum, 
combining the disciplines
of graphic design and
fine art with standard reading,
writing, and arithmetic.

Each year, teams worldwide
compete in the Elephant Polo
Championships held in
Nepal. The New York Blue team
represented the United States,
who nearly realized a gold
medal in their first year of the
tournament. The visual identity
reflected the triumphant
nature of a New York City
championship team,
seamlessly blending into
this animal sport.

The Orinda Intermediate
School (OIS) Green Team is
a Northern California school
initiative to raise awareness
about local environmental issues,
the logo represents the school’s
initials but, more importantly,
three main elements of our
ecosystem—our planet, forests,
waters and wildlife. The logo
was used primarily on green
t-shirts for students and faculty.

An annual non-profit benefit
event held at a tavern in the
East Village of New York City,
where participants compete
for the prize of the best
homemade chili, while imbibing
the local beer selection.
The event was created and
hosted by a New York resident
from the Bay Area as a way
to benefit various organizations
including Slow Food
International and the American
Cetacean Society. 

A promotional logo was created
for a specialized, weekly yoga
class for pregnant women living
in Brooklyn, New York.

Six Degrees is a Bay Area
record label that produces
and markets accessible,
genre-bending records that
explore world music traditions,
modern dance grooves, 
electronic music, and overlooked
pop gems. The minimal logo
is a play off the shape and forms
of a record player—the
negative space of the number
six acting as the record, the
ascender of the six as the record
player arm and the degree
symbol as the power button—
and was a conceptual rebranding
of their current logo, which
combines a decorative number
six with a musical clef symbol. 

Terra Capital Partners is a
New York-based income fund
manager that originates and
manages bridge loans, preferred
equity investments, and
mezzanine loans secured by
commercial real estate.
The classic, serif type treatment
juxtaposed with a contemporary
and iconic symbol of adjoining
office skyscrapers, seamlessly
connects the idea of financial
confidence and reputation with
their core skill set of commercial
real estate. The fact that Terra
Capital is a major player in
New York real estate finance is
a constant reminder with the
letter ‘T’ acting as the bridge in
the negative space between
the two buildings of the logo. 

An expressive logo was created
for a non-profit organization
promoting women’s health in
Nicaragua. The name of the
collective translates as “Flower
of the River.”
